My name is LM Tan. I would like to take this opportunity to share what has happened in my life before I came to know Jesus Christ and how my life has changed after I received Jesus Christ as my personal savior. Before this, I was not influenced by any religion, belief, practice or teachings. As a student, going to school, studying and sitting for exams have become the routine of my life.
Earlier this year, after my mother quit her job, she approached my dad, my little brother and I to join this church which is only a few streets from my house. Without much consideration, I agreed with her. Since then, attending church service on every Sunday has become our family activity. After accepting Jesus in my life, I can feel God’s presence in me. My life is not the same as before, I feel that I am getting closer to God. As I walk closer to God, my life undergoes some transformation. Among some of the changes in me are:
1. Becoming thankful to people around me:
I was never satisfied with anything and never appreciated my parents’ concerns for me especially in my studies. I did not like the disciplinary control that my parents put on me. I did not ever want to do what I was asked to do. I always demanded to have total freedom to do things my way. All these had made me a disobedient and unhappy teenager. But, God has taught us to be thankful that even Jesus died for us on the cross. That’s why; I began to learn to be thankful in everything and to the people who care for me. Because I know that only when I am thankful, Jesus will be glad and I will be happy.
2. Do not get angry so easily:
I used to get angry easily. If people did not do what I wanted, I said mean things, pulling a long face, hating the person, even to my own mother. Now that I learnt Jesus that said,” Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” I want to be like Jesus, to be loving and kind every day. Truly, I do not get angry so easily nowadays.
3. Giving and receiving:
I used to perceive that parents’ responsibilities are to give what the child wants. Once my demand was not being satisfied, I grumbled and complained and became unhappy. Ever since I learnt from the Word of God that says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” I begin to learn to give more especially to my family members. And I find that even a warm hug, a thankful smile, a helping hand offered to them can make them so happy, and make me feel happy too.
4. Obeying my parents:
I used to argue over little things especially with my mother. We did not seem to communicate in harmony especially when the topic pertaining to my study attitude or disciplinary issues was raised. As a result, I disobeyed her most of the time and refused to talk much to her. I think my mother must have realized the seriousness of our cold relationship and she had therefore quit from her very demanding job to be able to rebuild our relationship. I began to understand her feelings more and know that what she had done for me is meant to be good for me. The Words of God teach me, “To obey and respect our parents.” And this has been a reminder to me all the time.
I am glad that we are much closer now, we spend more time together, we talk, we play and we pray to our precious God, our savior. It is God who has made me a better and happier person now. Praise the Lord, Amen!
